PURINA SADDLE SERIES AWARDS 2009-10

I want to thank Purina Mills and Fran Minnaert for their sponsorship of the Purina Saddle Series.  I have been working closely with Purina Mills horse feed for over 25 years.  I have learned so much about nutrition and how to keep my horses happy and healthy from Purina’s research.  It is so important now to know what you are feeding and the cost of your feed so you can have that competitive edge.  Without Purina’s support, the Purina Saddle Series would not be as successful as it has and I look forward to working with them for many years to come.

I want to thank Jim Hunter and Carol Martin at Bronco Billy’s saddles in Council Bluffs, Iowa,  for their support of the Purina Saddle Series.  They have beautiful handmade saddles for our awards.  These saddles are not only beautiful but very usable and durable.  Many horsemen are riding in these saddles after 10 or 15 years of ownership.  These barrel racing winners of the saddles, all tell me “This is the best saddle I could have won”.  If you want quality merchandise for your horse, then you need to visit broncobillysaddles.com

I want to thank the Papillion Saddle Club for their generous donation to the youth awards.  With this cash donation, everyone in the 18 and under class receives a gift whether they have placed or not in the jackpots.  This is helping to encourage the youth of today to compete and enjoy their horses

Rachel Casper and Sister Champion of Open Barrels Purina Saddle Series with Fran, Jim and Carol

Saddle Champion of Open 4-D Barrel Race
Rachel Casper and Sister

Sister, (Watch Rock N Easy) didn’t have the beginning of a typical barrel horse.  Being born and raised on my parent’s horse farm, Sister enjoyed 9 years of being a pasture ornament except for the occasional trail ride or sporadic trip to a barrel race so we could ride her around afterwards.  She finally got her chance after my good horse Ellie suffered two serious injuries in 2006.  Knowing that she was broke was the deciding factor in choosing her as my next prospect.  After riding her a few times, I realized that she wasn’t all that different from starting with a 3 or 4 year old.  She couldn’t walk in a straight line when I rode her, and absolutely refused to back up.  The one thing she did really well was stop.

Sister took to the pattern naturally.  Her natural rate and bend made her turns come along quickly, and she always gives 100%, so I was always happy with her early runs.  Adding speed took a bit longer than I had anticipated.  Having always had free runners, Sister and all of her rate was a new experience for me.  I always knew that she would turn an awesome barrel, but I couldn’t seem to get a lot of speed on the pattern.  As she gained more confidence with me, the speed came.

I credit my dad Ray and my sister Reann for Sister’s abilities before I started riding her.  Reann has great hands, and kept Sister really soft, and gave her great barrel racing fundamentals.  My dad got her over refusing to back up and did a great job breaking her to ride.  Without them I’m not sure I would have had as much success with her.

I am so thankful and feel blessed to have such a talented horse.  Sister has taught me so much more than I ever taught her.  She has also given me back my passion to barrel race.  She makes it fun again, and pushes me to try just as hard as she does.  She is an inspiration, and makes my day everyday.  I think we were always meant to be a team, and now that we are, I’m having the time of my life with her.

Thank you to Donna for putting on the saddle series every year, and to all of the office help, barrel setters, tractor drivers, and gate people.  You all keep the barrel races running smoothly and you are very much appreciated.  I was so excited to have Sam Bliss at all of the barrel races taking pictures.  You really captured some fantastic photos and can’t wait to get all of mine ordered!  Thank you to all of our GREAT sponsors, especially Purina Horse Feeds and Fran Minnaert.   A big thank you also goes to Bronco Billy’s, owned by Jim and Carol, for donating the beautiful saddles.  I also want to thank T.C. Snyder for perfecting Sister’s feet and always squeezing me in at the last minute for a reset.

Joanne Hoffman and Special, Reserve Champion of Open Barrels with Fran, Jim and Carol

Reserve Champion of Open 4-D Barrel Race
Joanne Hoffman and Special

With a shaky start to the year with downed barrels and a nasty fall, Special (JA Ramblin Bug) once again proved to me just how lucky I am to have a horse like her.   You always hear about that once in a life time horse and she certainly is mine.

I started out the year without any expectations of winning a saddle.  I was just going as my daughter, Amanda, wanted to get her horse more solid.   But as things happened, we started placing and then the quest began.

She was bred to run as she has Special Effort and Rocket Wrangler on her papers.   Her job in life was to be on the track but due to some unforeseen circumstances never made it…lucky for me.  I think the older she gets the better she gets...or maybe I now trust  her more and let her do her job.

My daughter and I have been feeding Purina products for the past several years and are very pleased with the results.    Our feeds of choice are Purina Horse Chow 100 and Omolene 200.    I want to express my gratitude to Fran Minneart and Purina for the sponsorship of this great series as well as Donna Rankin for all the work she puts forth.   I also want to thank Bronco Billy’s for their saddle sponsorship and the wonderful saddles they provide.

Youth Champion
Taylor Heinert and SmartNLucky

My name is Taylor Heinert.   I live in Papillion, Nebraska with my parents and brothers.   SmartNLucky is my horse.  I bought Lucky about one year ago.   He is 12 years old.   I am in the 9th grade at Papillion South high school.  I am 15 years old.   I have been around horses basically my whole life, but didn’t start running barrels and poles till I was 11.  This is my first year competing in the Purina Saddle Series.    I also compete in Iowa High School Rodeos and NBHA.     When I’m not competing in barrels, I like playing volleyball or hanging out with my friends.   Lucky loves riding in the pasture and LOVES eating, especially Purina Strategy horse feed.  I want to thank Fran Minnaert, from Purina and, Jim and Carol, from Bronco Billy’s  for their sponsorship of the series.  I look forward to competing in the “You Gotta Start Somewhere” Youth Series this summer, also sponsored by purinamills.com and broncobillysaddles.com.

Pole Bending Champion and All Around Champion
Jamie Thomas and Annie

My name in Jamie Thomas. I am 12 years old and a 7th grader at Syracuse High School. I've been riding horses since I was 5 years old. By the age of 8, I joined 4-H, showing in Western, English, and the speed events. Of course, this is where my love for speed began.

We purchased my horse, Annie (Watch Ann Glo) in 2005. She is now 10 years old and after a couple of years of knocked barrels and hard work, we now are running together as a great team.  Annie has been eating Strategy ever since we purchased her and loving it. We compete in NBHA, Nebraska Jr. High Rodeo, and show in 4-H.

One of my most memorable moments was winning the saddle in April 2010 in the Purina all around division. I would like to thank Donna Rankin and all of her Purina Saddle Series sponsors, including Fran Minnaert.  Also, I want to thank Jim and Carol from Bronco Billy’s for making such a beautiful saddle.
