Purina Saddle Series OPEN Champion
Laurie Hartman and Robin
Thanks so much to Donna and the crew for making this series a success. The sponsors need a big “Thank you” also. They include Bronco Billy’s, ehorsehotline, and Rustic Traditions. I also have to thank Sam Bliss for taking all of those great pictures. And most of all, continuous thanks to the Lord for giving me such a nice horse as Robin (Rebas Rosy Robin, 1996 solid APHA mare) and the ability to ride her. It is so nice to have a partner as honest and willing to please as Robin is. All things are possible with some natural talent, lots of dedication, hard work, and a little good luck now and again.

Joanne Hoffman and Special
2009 Purina Saddle Series Reserve Champion
I purchased Special (JA Ramblin Bug) as a 5 year old from Delores Smith and Jamie Berry in Castle, Oklahoma. She is bred to run as she is a granddaughter of Special Effort. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and of course, had to have her. She has done a lot for me throughout the years. Special is now 17 and running better than ever. I just have to get her out and ride her to keep her happy. It is so nice to just come to the barrel race, warm her up and go. She has won a lot for me over the years but winning one of the saddles the last two years are among her greatest accomplishments. She made the MSRA finals when she was 8 but after that she found another gear (or two). We struggled through the next couple of years where we just couldn’t click but the last few years have seen a change in that. She always gives it her all, even though beforehand she might be hanging her head, lip dangling and eyes closed. She has been referred to as having the running style of a ‘freight train”…..point her and hold on. She is not without her quirks - she can be at a rodeo with flags flapping in the wind, bands playing and all the commotion but that stray leaf that may blow by can send her sideways. I would like to thank Purina Horse Feeds and Fran Minneart for the sponsorship of these barrel races.

Sucha Sam
2009 Purina Saddle Series Horse With Most Heart
We purchased Sam when he was a 3 year old green broke and started on barrels. Although at times he didn't always want to cooperate going it the gate it wasn't too long before we found out how much he loved to run and run hard. When he got mad or nervous he would sometimes stomp his back leg. He would sometimes get so nervous at the gate you could feel his heart beat.
Although in the beginning Rita was the primary rider - Mary (Rita's daughter) started showing him at 4-H shows both in halter classes and speed events winning many grand champions throughout the years in barrels, poles & flag race.
He had also run at MBRA (Midwest Barrel Racing Association) for quite a few years winning many awards for both Rita & Mary there too. |
